What to Say When a Beloved Pet Dies

What not to say — and what to say instead — to a friend or family member facing the loss of a beloved pet.

Grief experts agree, the following is a list of what NOT to say to a friend or family member facing the loss of a beloved pet:

“I know how you feel.” You could, instead, ask your friend to tell you how he or she feels.

“It’s part of God’s plan.” This phrase can evoke anger.

“Look at what you have to be thankful for.” They know – but right now they are grieving.

“He’s in a better place now.” The bereaved may or may not believe this – offer your opinions only when asked.

“This is behind you now – it’s time to get on with your life.” Remember, grief has no timetable.

Statements that begin with “You should” or “You will.” Instead, you could begin your comments with: “Have you thought about…” or “You might consider…”

    What You SHOULD Say Instead:

Acknowledge the situation. Example: “I am so sorry to hear that your (pet/cat/dog,etc.) died.” Don’t be afraid to use the word “died.”

Express your concern. Example: “I’m sorry to hear that this happened to you.”

Be genuine in your communication, and don’t hide your feelings. Example: “I’m not sure what to say, but I want you to know I care.”

Offer your support. Example: “Tell me what I can do for you.”

Ask how he or she feels. Don’t assume you already know. People want to be asked.

Share a memory of the deceased pet. It means the world to people to know their beloved pet is not forgotten.

While we can’t take away the pain of a loss, we can provide a measure of comfort and support. It’s important to allow others the time they need to process their emotions and remember that grief follows its own trajectory.

Grief experts recommend taking time to commemorate the life of your pet. Fifteen ways to honor their memory, from a memorial service to a keepsake box.

The death of a beloved animal companion is a hardship for any pet parent or family. And although grieving is a natural process, it’s not an easy transition. Grief experts recommend taking the time to commemorate the life of your pet.

We understand that the bond between humans and animals is powerful, and the loss of a pet can be profound and overwhelming.

ICCFA offers a wonderful on-line resource for dealing with loss, including specific ways to honor and remember your pet:

     – Spend a few minutes reflecting on pleasant memories of your pet.

     – Contribute monetarily to an animal protection group.

     – Volunteer at an animal protection group.

     – Visit your pet’s burial site. Add a few flowers or decorate with an object they enjoyed in life.

     – Donate money or time to a charity or organization in honor of your late pet. Choose an organization or charity based on your animal’s breed or a particular cause that is close to your heart. Animal shelters, rescue groups, and humane societies all appreciate volunteers.

     – Send sympathy cards to others who have lost a pet.

     – Create a small memorial in your pet’s honor by planting trees, shrubs, and flowers.

Pet Emergency Preparedness

If a natural disaster required emergency evacuation, would you be ready to help your pets? A checklist for compiling a pet emergency kit and a plan.

If a natural disaster that required emergency evacuation were to strike, would you be ready to help your pets? Best Friends Animal Society provides a wonderful online article that outlines how to prepare for three types of disasters:

    – Immediate: a gas leak or house fire – when immediate evacuation is necessary

    – Short warning: a toxic spill or fire in the neighborhood – when you have to grab your pets and a few supplies and leave within a short period of time

    – Seasonal disaster: hurricanes, floods, or wildfires – when you’ll need a plan for gathering your pets, packing up supplies, and evacuating

The following checklist can help you compile your pet emergency kit and construct a plan to keep everyone safe.

Here’s a checklist of some things you can do right now to be

    prepared for a disaster

. Please don’t wait to accomplish these tasks, as they may be too difficult once the emergency has begun.

Put your pets’ ID on their collars: your name, address, and phone number. Because cellphones and landlines might be down for a while, consider adding the phone number of a relative or friend who lives outside of your area.

Periodically check your pets’ collars to make sure they fit properly and tags are securely fastened. If the collar can slip over a pet’s head when you pull on it, you may lose them if they panic and pull back from you.

In addition to having pets’ ID’s on their collars, get your pets microchipped. Be sure to register the chip in your name and provide additional phone numbers.

Buy carriers appropriate for your pets’ sizes, which means carriers that give them enough room to stand and turn around. The carriers should be easy to transport. Label each carrier with the pet’s name and your phone number.

Always have on hand at least a two-week supply of your pets’ medications.

Take an animal first-aid class if one is offered in your community, and put together a pet first-aid kit.

Determine where you will go (i.e., homes of relatives or friends, pet-friendly hotels). Identify several evacuation routes to get there because one route might not be accessible in the event of a disaster.

Keep all paperwork in one easily accessible place in your house or garage so it can be collected at a moment’s notice. This could include:

You’ll also want to pack a storage container with necessary items for a pet emergency kit. Even though these are items that you are probably already using, it is helpful to have a set that is specifically set aside to grab and go. Here are some items to consider:

      A roll of paper towels

Thanksgiving Pet Safety Tips

Many traditional Thanksgiving foods put pets at risk. Which festive foods to keep away from your pet, from turkey bones to unbaked yeast dough.

Thanksgiving is a holiday that centers around family and food. And while it’s tempting to invite our furry family members to participate in our feast, many traditional Thanksgiving foods can put our pets at risk. Here are some tips for keeping your pet safe on Thanksgiving, provided by Dr. Melody R. Conklin, VMD, MBA.

Keep your pet away from these dangerous festive foods:

    – Turkey – Avoid giving your pet turkey meat, especially fatty dark meat and skin (a small amount of unseasoned white meat is okay), and never give them any

    leftover bones

. Not only are bones a choking hazard, but they can splinter inside your pet’s digestive tract and cause a trip to the emergency vet.

    – Garlic, onion, leeks, and chives. These seasonings are common in many Thanksgiving dishes and are toxic to dogs and cats – they can cause destruction of their red blood cells. Avoid giving your pet a bite of anything cooked with these ingredients, like green beans, potatoes, stuffing, or gravy.

    – Unbaked dough containing yeast. Unbaked yeast dough can cause a stomach blockage if eaten because the yeast in the dough makes it rise and expand. Plus, the natural fermentation of the yeast in your cat or dog’s stomach can cause alcohol poisoning. If you plan on baking some delicious dinner rolls for Thanksgiving, make sure to proof your dough somewhere that your pet can’t get to it, such as in a turned-off oven or microwave, not right on the counter where it’s often in your pet’s easy reach.

Good news for older adults who own a pet! A new study indicates that owning a pet for over five years may help cognitive skills stay sharp as we age.

Researchers found that adults ages 50 or older who had owned a pet of any kind for more than five years showed slower decline in verbal memory over time compared to non-pet owners.

The study was conducted by researchers at the University of Florida, University of Michigan, and Virginia Commonwealth University.

Jennifer Applebaum, lead author of the study, states, “We can’t show that this is causal but it does show that pets could buffer or have a protective effect on older adults’ cognition and we think it has to do with some of the mechanisms related to stress buffering.”

This is the first study to examine the impact of pet ownership over time on cognitive function among a national sample of U.S. adults ages 50 or older. The 1,300 people studied are participants in the Health and Retirement Study, a longitudinal survey that is tracking 20,000 adults to learn about aging-related issues.

The average age of those included was 65, 53% of which owned pets, with nearly one-third owning pets for more than five years. While all types of pets were included in the study, dogs were the most prevalent, followed by cats.

Over six years, cognitive scores declined slower in pet owners and were the strongest in long-term pet owners.

A positive relationship with a pet is thought to buffer stress via emotional support, which also may promote healthy cognitive aging. Taking care of a pet – walking a dog, feeding a cat – also boosts physical activity, which is linked to cognitive health.

According to the authors of the study, “These findings provide early evidence to suggest that long-term pet ownership could be protective against cognitive decline, providing a novel and fundamental step to examine how sustained relationships with companion animals contribute to brain health.”

Helping a Child Adjust to the Loss of a Pet

Pets play a special role in the lives of children, and losing one brings great emotional hardship. Recommendations for helping a child through the grieving process.

According to Dr. Wallace Sife, pets can be silly, childlike, playful, and joyous. It therefore stands to reason that pets make perfect companions for children, who learn about love, trust, and loyalty from their relationship. Pets also provide a sense of security and loving companionship when the child’s parents are not present.

Pets play a special role in the lives of children, and the death of a beloved pet brings great emotional hardship. To help the child adjust, Dr. Sife recommends the following:

    – Hold a ceremony for the pet that includes the child. Such an experience strengthens the child’s sense of family unity as well as self-reliance during the mourning process.

    – Reminisce fondly with the child about the pet. Use pictures or drawings, and associate positive and happy events with the pet’s memory.

    – Ask the local librarian to suggest children’s books that include the death of a pet in the storyline. This will help the child recognize that the death of a pet is a natural part of life.

    – Discuss with the child the possibility of eventually getting another pet. Emphasize that the new pet will not replace the beloved pet that died, but will be a new animal friend in need of a good home. Explain that we can love more than one pet at a time, just as we can love more than one person at a time.

    – Ask how the child feels about the pet’s death and why. Let them express their views openly, and never argue with them about their feelings. Be supportive, but not critical.

    – Inform the child’s teacher about the death of the pet and its effect on the child. Ask for advice, if needed.

Dr. Sife also recommends ensuring that the child has a well-adjusted adult role model to rely on during the grieving process. Children look to adults for guidance and security, and adults should take special care to be open, supportive, and sensitive to children’s feelings as they adjust to the loss of their beloved pet.

Do Pets Grieve?

Do pets grieve the loss of another household pet? Research on surviving dogs and cats suggests yes — and most return to normal behavior within six months.

Do pets grieve the loss of another household pet? According to an article by Veterinarian Dr. Ann Hohenhaus for the Schwarzman Animal Medical Center, the answer is yes!

To quote Dr. Hohenhaus, “A survey of several hundred pet owners in New Zealand and Australia reported on

. Dog families reported behavior changes in 74% of dogs. The most common behavior changes were demanding more owner attention and spending time in the favorite spot of the deceased companion. Dogs ate more slowly and smaller amounts of food than when their companion was alive, but only if the companion was another dog. About one third of owners reported their dog slept more after the death of their companion.

Grief in cats seems to be similar to that in dogs. Like dogs, cats demanded more attention from their owners after their companion’s passing. Cats also spent more time in the favorite spot of the deceased pet. There was one finding specific to cats, however. Grieving cats increased the frequency and volume of their vocalization. This finding was true if the deceased companion was either another cat or a dog. All this suggests dog and cat grieve the loss of an animal companion.”

Dr. Hohenhaus concludes by stating that stories of pet grief abound, including dogs refusing to eat for a week after the death of another household pet and intense personality changes in surviving animals. The good news is, however, that most studies indicate that grieving pets return to normal behavior within six months.

Whatever the circumstance, pet experts agree that it’s important to be willing to give your pets a little extra TLC during the grieving process. Watch for their cues. At times, pets may require a little extra attention, while others may need a little space. With time and love, grief will usually subside and their behavior will return to normal, but don’t hesitate to reach out to your veterinarian if you have questions or concerns.

    – Keep treats out of reach. If ingested, sugar-free candies and chocolate can be especially dangerous to your pet’s health.

-Be mindful of your pet’s costume. Costumes should fit properly without restricting movement or causing trouble breathing. Be sure the costume doesn’t rub anywhere that may cause sores or bare spots.

-Ensure that decorations are safely placed. Pay special attention to open flames, including lighted jack-o-lanterns.

-Keep anxious pets calm during activity. Provide your pet with a safe place to hunker down during trick-or-treating hours. Turning on music or the TV can help mask the sounds of the doorbell ringing.

-Ensure that your pet’s ID’s and collars are updated. As there is a higher-than-average risk of your pet escaping when doors are opening or closing, make sure that they are wearing their collars with updated contact information so they can be returned home quickly.

American Red Cross offers the following tips to help ensure that your pets stay healthy and safe this summer:

-Never leave your pet in a hot vehicle, even for a few minutes.

The inside temperature of the car can quickly reach 120 degrees, even with the windows cracked open.

Exercise in the early morning or evening hours only.

Choosing a Pet Cremation Provider: Five Questions You Should Ask

The pet cremation industry is unregulated. Five questions to ask before selecting a provider — from on-site crematories to how remains are identified.

Did you know that the pet cremation industry is unregulated? This means that there is no accountability at a state or federal level for businesses offering pet cremation services. If you are considering cremation for your beloved pet, here are five questions you should ask before selecting a provider:

1 – Do you have your own on-site crematory?

Businesses offering pet cremation services may use off-site or out-of-town providers. It is also important to know if your pet is being cremated in a legitimate crematory versus a make-shift incinerator. We have our own on-site crematory specifically for pets.

2 – Do you offer private pet cremation?

Many pet cremation facilities say they offer private cremation, but, in reality, their pet is cremated with other animals with partitions in place. We offer 100% private pet cremation – your pet is cremated alone.

      3 –

May I tour and inspect your facility?

It may be a reg flag if a pet cremation provider will not let you see behind the scenes. We offer private tours and an opportunity to conduct a full inspection of our facility and crematory.

4 – How do you guarantee that I will receive my pet’s cremated remains?

A good provider will offer a method to ensure that you receive your pet’s correct remains. We utilize a unique stainless steel disc to track all pet cremations, thus ensuring proper identification. Additionally, we offer the opportunity to witness your pet’s cremation.

Hello Southern Utah – I’m Larry Hansen. My business partner Russell Atkin and I are pleased to showcase The Pet Cremation Center of Southern Utah. Russ and I are licensed funeral directors and also the owners of Serenity Funeral Home and The Cremation Center of Southern Utah. Together, we have over fifty years of combined experience in funeral service. As established and trusted names in our profession, we maintain our funeral home and cremation center with the utmost professionalism, integrity, and dedication.

Over the past several years, we received many inquiries and noticed a need in our community for quality pet cremation services. We are pleased to announce we have expanded our business to include pet cremation.

As a division of Serenity Funeral Home and The Cremation Center of Southern Utah, The Pet Cremation Center of Southern Utah is located alongside our funeral home. The Cremation Center of Southern Utah has been in business since 2009. Two separate crematories are provided and are located on opposite ends of our building – one for humans and one for pets. The care for humans and animals is kept separate in all aspects – ethically and logistically. Both crematories are environmentally-friendly and state-of-the-art.
